The Story Behind the Air Jordan III & How to Buy 3 Colorsways for the Price of 1 AJIII

The Air Jordan III was the first Air Jordan shoe to feature the Jumpman logo

The Air Jordan III from 1988 was a turning point in the relationship between Michael Jordan and the Air Jordan brand that we all know so well today. The fact is that the Air Jordan III almost never happened because Jordan wanted to leave Nike at the time, however, he was convinced by his father and new designer Tinker Hatfield to stay with Nike. Jordan took this opportunity to make more demands on the level of luxury and had much more of a hand in the design process.

Jordan wore the shoe during the 1988 Dunk contest and many other occasions and it's said to be his favorite shoe. Featuring a heap of new design elements this lightweight and stylish shoe would become arguably the most iconic shoe in the Air Jordan catalog.

Introducing legendary design elements and an 'air' of luxury

Now legendary designer Tinker Hatfield was given the job to design the Jordan III along with Jordan, he then went on to design the next twelve Air Jordans. Jordan wanted his shoes to have an 'air' of luxury that was not present in other basketball shoes at the time. He wanted some kind of animal print (a luxury material a la snakeskin boots, alligator shoes) and what they came up with was the 'elephant print'. Of course fake elephant skin but nonetheless a cool and original design.

It also featured visible 'air' a feature that debuted on the legendary 'Air Max 1' from 1987. It was the first shoe to feature the 'NIKE AIR' logo on the back but this was later replaced with the famous 'Jumpman logo' another first on Jordans. The shoe also featured 'tumbled leather' another luxury element.

The original 1988 Air Jordan 3 colorways

The shoe originally came in four colorways: White/Cement Grey, Black/Cement Grey, White/Fire Red, True Blues/Cement Grey. Jordan rocked White for the dunk contest and the regular season, Black for the All-Star Game and the Fire Red for the playoffs. Jordan never rocked the True Blues as a Bull but had to break them out when he played for the Wizards.

Original price at the time of release & re-releases and popularity over time

In 1987 when they were first released they went for $100. During the second release in 1994, they retailed for $105 but were not selling and quickly got placed on the sales rack. However, on the second re-release in 2001, they sold well sporting a $100 price tag once again just like they did in 1987. The dip and rise in popularity could be due to the re-releases being around Jordan's first retirement in 1993 and his return to the NBA in 2001 after three years in retirement. The Air Jordans have remained popular to this day with more colorways being released and special editions and carry an average price tag of $200 for the standard versions (2017).
