Back in the 80s & 90s, MTV was the go-to channel for music videos and music news. And in 1990 they came up with a really cool concept which combined sports and celebrities. It was called MTV Rock N' Jock Diamond Derby, with Derby meaning a match between two rival teams. The name was changed the following year to MTV Rock N' Jock Softball Challenge. The game known as softball is a game similar to baseball, but it's played with larger, softer ball and on a smaller field (sometimes indoor). Then in 1991, MTV also included basketball into their concept and they changed the name to simply MTV Rock N' Jock. They would later add football (1997) and bowling (1999). The event would become an annual fixture and the very first softball game in 1990 included stars such as MC Hammer & Keanu Reeves playing for the Aardvarks and Tone Loc & Kevin Costner playing for the Salamanders.
The first basketball game was in 1991 and was called the Rock N’ Jock B-Ball Jam. The rosters for the two teams were a mix of professional athletes from the NBA and various rappers and actors. From the entertainment world, they had: Mark Wahlberg, Will Smith, Jaleel White (Steve Urkel), MC Lyte, and Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers). Joining them on the court were NBA stars like Magic Johnson, John Salley, Ron Harper, Reggie Miller, Kurt Rambis, Vlade Divac and the 5 foot 7 inches tall Spud Webb who reportedly had a 50-inch vertical leap! The teams certainly were talent-packed and making the concept complete they had a professional sportscaster, Steve Albert, do the color commentating with TV show celeb, Dan Ober.
The games were highly entertaining and contained many memorable moments throughout the years. And while we can still watch the games on YouTube, the need for proper memorabilia has been lacking for a long time. That was until a professional jersey company specializing in retro jerseys from movies and TV shows decided to recreate the best jerseys from the MTV Rock N' Jock franchise. The first jersey out of the gate is the classic blue & white original 1st annual B-Ball Jam jersey from 1991. It features the iconic MTV logo slightly stylized for the event with a hoop and a basketball as well as some simple lines symbolizing the various lines on a court.
MTV would continue to throw Rock N' Jock B-Ball Jams until 1997 and in the process created a couple of memorable and amazing looking jerseys. We are proud to say that we regularly stock several of these jerseys at any given time. Stay tuned to our newsletter to see when we are having specials and new arrivals.
